Sergio Perez: Which F1 team will the Mexican drive for in the 2021 Formula 1 season? We look at its options.

Sergio Perez is a free agent after the 2020 season ends with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix later this year. This after his current employers Racing Point decided to fire him for the 2021 season and possibly from Sebastian Vettel. Vettel is also named Aston Martin’s brand ambassador after Racing Point transformed into Aston Martin’s F1 team next season.

Alfa Romeo F1

Meanwhile, the Mexican Perez wants to continue in Formula 1, a sport in which he has eight career podiums. And at 30 he knows that he has a lot to give, considering how well Kimi Raikkonen does at 40. Ironically, it could be Raikkonen giving way to Perez at Alfa Romeo, the Italian team. Alfa Romeo team principal Frederic Vasseur had spoken about the Kimi question and sounded optimistic about proceeding with him.

In that case, Antonio Giovinazzi could be asked to make room but not join Sergio Perez. Instead, they are in talks with Perez ‘former teammate Nico Hulkenberg, who is aiming for a full comeback in F1. Alternatively, they could opt for the stars of F2 – Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott and Robert Schwartzman. All three are members of the Ferrari Driver Academy, and Alfa Romeo is a sister company of the Ferrari company.

Haas F1

This leaves Sergio Perez with the American team Haas the most realistic shot to continue the sport. One or both of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen are expected to quit after this season. If this is actually the case, then you expect Günther Steiner to step in for Perez, although the former emphasizes that he is in a hurry. There’s also the question of whether Perez would like to race for a competitive team, which Force India / Racing Point already was.

Red Bull Racing F1

There is also a solution for the above – the multiple season winner Red Bull Racing. That sounds like a long shot, but if Red Bull is ambitious enough, which we are also seeing in the Red Bull football teams, they could potentially get him to replace Thai driver Alexander Albon, who has been hot and cold this season.

But with the group company making Thai investments, politics could play out again in Formula 1, as Carlos Sainz alluded to. Sainz expressed his anger that Racing Point let go of Perez to keep Lance Stroll, the son of owner Lawrence Stroll. Lance, Respect where it’s due, has done well so far this season, finishing 6th overall, including a podium.

So all in all, with Haas, Perez remains the most realistic, if not the ideal, goal. But we take F1 here and anything can happen here, especially in the transfer market. If things fit together, we could potentially see Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez race for Red Bull Racing in 2021.
