Last season, the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing team did a very good job in its first year partnership with Honda, taking a strong third place in the constructors’ championship, thanks in part to the experience of the second Red Bull team – Scuderia Toro Rosso – attributed to Honda in 2018.
With the rules barely changing between 2019-2020, teams were able to focus on refining what they had last year rather than diving into new designs before the 2021 rule changes.
The RB16 is the work of a team of engineers at Milton Keynes overseen by Technical Director Adrian Newey and Technical Director Pierre Waché.
Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon will drive the RB16.

“For the first time in five or six years we have stability in the regulations and that gives us a real chance to fight our rivals,” said team principal Christian Horner. “All of the lessons we learned over the past year were carried over from RB15 to RB16. We also have stability in the team and in addition to the dynamism we built up in the second half of last year, this year we are in a very good place to take on a strong challenge. “
Last year Honda took three wins and the team is hoping to do more this year.
Horner says Honda needs a lot of credit for getting the team to where it is now.
“An important factor in overcoming a title challenge is the aggregate,” said Horner. “With Honda we have an intensely motivated and competitive partner. They did a great job in 2019, and each iteration of the aggregate brought more power and more power. It feels like we’re getting closer to our main competitors. We worked very closely with them on the integration and they share our motivation and our desire to win. You really want to build on last year’s accomplishments and are focused on taking this next step. “
Horner believes the team is in good shape for 2020.
“I think we are in the best shape we’ve had in a while with our drivers, the technical team at our Milton Keynes plant, our record breaking pit crew and Honda’s intense competitiveness. Time will tell, but I’m confident we can fight for the big prizes in 2020. “
