Red Bull Racing expects starting penalties for engine changes in 2019

Red Bull Racing F1 team advisor Helmut Marko says Red Bull expects to absorb engine penalties in 2019.

While the team is confident of moving from customer Renault’s performance to a new factory engine partnership with Honda, Marko admits reliability could continue to be an issue. It is also likely that the team will go over the three-engine limit in 2019 and face starter penalties during the season.

“We are assuming that we will be using five engines for the season,” said Marko. “But if we plan the penalties wisely, the damage will be small. Performance is more important.”

Marko says Honda has already overtaken Renault but there remains a gap with Mercedes and Ferrari. To fill this gap, Honda and Red Bull agree that aggressive development is necessary this year.

Marko hopes that it will be enough for a championship challenge.

“We have planned the world title for 2019,” said Marko.
