Ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend, the Red Bull Racing F1 team challenged a host of British icons to a dramatic race.

British icons with a twist, that is …

With Red Bulls Max Verstappen currently leading the Formula 1 World Championship, the race this weekend is a key event.

There will also be the debut of F1’s new Sprint Race qualifying format, which is designed to add extra excitement to the process.

The best of British on the route

Red Bull F1 versus Spitfire

The special video shows a masterful 2011 Red Bull Racing RB7 against six (mostly) classic British vehicles.

The rivals range from a London bus to a black taxi to a car full of festival goers. The star of the show, however, is an RAF Supermarine Spitfire.

At nearly 400 mph, almost twice the top speed of the RB7 F1 car, the Spitfire is a worthy opponent.

Red Bull Racing CEO and Team Principal Christian Horner said that his personal “winner” from the race “has to be the Spitfire – the sound, the grace in the air, it’s fantastic to see”.

Significantly, the Great Britain Grand Prix will be complete this weekend. Horner commented, “We really missed out on well-attended races and I think this is the first time we’ll see a real audience and I think it’s tremendously exciting.”

He added: “It is always a great thrill to drive in front of the UK crowd – I live only 10 minutes from Silverstone so I sleep in my own bed to myself! I’ve always loved the UK Grand Prix so I look forward to seeing everyone there. “

Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing driver and current F1 championship leader, is looking forward to the return of the fans.

He said: “When we were at Silverstone last year, the track was fantastic, but the atmosphere was lacking. It is really something very special to have the full British spectators back and I hope the race will be just as exciting. “
