Pierre Gasly was unceremoniously kicked from his F1 seat at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing after unsuccessful in the first 12 races of the 2019 Formula 1 season. Rookie Alex Albon was promoted by Toro Rosso.
Under pressure for the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, the last race before the summer break, Gasly knew that behind the wheel he had to show what he was capable of. A season and career best performance in fourth at the British Grand Prix had given the team hope that the 23-year-old Frenchman was on an upward curve, but set a mistake at the crazy German Grand Prix – ironically, substitute Albon got stuck in the back Get him out of the running and back into the line of fire.
After Gasly had not reached the pace of former teammate Max Verstappen on the Hungaroring, he could not prevent Lewis Hamilton from making a decisive and race-winning second stop because he was too far behind.
This last disappointment was the last straw, even though Christian Horner publicly supported the driver after the race.
In a brief statement, the team said: “Red Bull is in a unique position to have four talented Formula One drivers under contract, who can be switched between Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso. The team will be in the next nine races use for evaluation. ” Alex’s achievement in making an informed decision about who will ride alongside Max in 2020.
“Everyone at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing looks forward to welcoming Alex to the team and supporting him in the next phase of his F1 career.”
For the 23-year-old Albon, the promotion is the chance to show what he can really do. After he had previously been dismissed from the Red Bull Junior Team – the driver development program – he was considered a last resort to take the seat of the Toro Rosso in the first place. After Daniil Kvyat stood on the podium in Germany, advancement seemed likely to be a long way off.
Gasly is sixth in the F1 drivers’ standings, Albon 15th.
