Helmut Marko was never shy to express his opinion in the media. Although the Red Bull Racing consultant has been in a very good mood lately with the team’s recent performance upgrade, he was still not entirely satisfied with Gasly’s performance at AlphaTauri.
Helmut Marko has been pleased with Red Bull’s performance lately and Yuki Tsunoda’s good performance on his debut in Bahrain, but the mention of Pierre Gasly fueled his anger.
According to Helmut Marko, Pierre Gasly, who qualified fifth at the Bahrain Grand Prix while his “impressive” team-mate Yuki Tsunoda qualified outside the top 10, did not have an impressive performance, and in his opinion Max Verstappen could have done one lap who was 0.25 seconds faster than the French.
“I would say that Max would definitely have won two or three tenths in qualifying. He would have managed Gasly’s time minus two and a half tenths,” said Helmut Marko in an interview with Motorsport.com.
We are happy to have Yuki Tsunoda on our team: Helmut Marko
On the contrary, Yuki Tsunoda seems to have won Helmut Marko’s trust, as the team advisor has nothing but good things to say about the young Japanese driver.
“With Yuki we have an incredible rough diamond. We don’t want to burn its wings. We will examine his progress and then make decisions in due course, ”said Helmut Marko. “The way he does it, the way he moves the car forward is fantastic. He’s a charismatic person too. We are delighted to have him.”
Helmut Marko spoke about a possible move to Red Bull for Tsunoda as Sergio Perez has a one-year contract and did not rule out the possibility entirely.
When asked about the possibility of Tsunoda coming up for an early promotion to Red Bull, Helmut Marko replied: “We’ll see. First 23 Grand Prix have to run. We’ll see how it develops.”
It appears Marko thinks Gasly got the most out of the driver (no pun intended), while he sees greater potential in young Tsunoda. Driving dynamics at Red Bull is a hot topic every season and it will be interesting to see who is at the fore this year.
