Max Verstappen says Lewis Hamilton was never an inspiration to him growing up. He has claimed that he cannot find “words” to describe their current relationship.

In an interview on the German talk show Sport und Talk from Hangar-7, the Dutchman said:

“Lewis? He was never an inspiration to me. I cannot describe our relationship. To be honest, I can’t find a word. “

Verstappen and Hamilton had a difficult relationship throughout 2021 as they battled for the World Cup. The couple collided on the track several times this season. This has created an exasperation between them and their teams that only intensified until the end of the year as the battle for the championship intensified.

“At the end of the season everything was fine (between us). Of course we had our moments and maybe we were mad at each other. But we also had great duels and spectacular overtaking maneuvers. “

In an interview with the BBC after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Max Verstappen claimed that they “had” each other sometimes during the season.

After the season ended in Abu Dhabi, however, the two generally behaved in a respectful and friendly manner to one another. Hamilton apparently congratulated Verstappen and Red Bull on their championship victory.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen hailed Lewis Hamilton as a “great athlete” and claimed he thanked the latter for helping make 2021 “a great season”.

Sergio Perez claims that Max Verstappen had problems with Mercedes

Max Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez has claimed that the former would struggle with Mercedes if he had switched to the team this year. The Mexican’s words are a reminder of how he struggled to move from Racing Point to Red Bull.

In an interview with GPFans, the Mexican driver said:

“Driving another unit is a completely different task. Driving a completely different philosophy of the car at a higher rake than driving it at a lower rake is a completely different task. You just approach things very differently and you have to learn new techniques. ”“ It would be the same if Max went to Mercedes. They are just very different. They drive very similar lap times, but the way in which they achieve the lap time is extremely different. “

“Checo” Perez joined Red Bull in early 2021 after losing his Racing Point (now Aston Martin) seat to Sebastian Vettel. Throughout the season, the Mexican driver struggled to get used to the RB16B, especially in qualifying.

Perez’s pace on race day was much better and at times comparable to Max Verstappen. However, his poor qualifying usually meant that most of his races were compromised from the start, which ultimately cost Red Bull the constructors’ championship.
