Alex Albon spoke about Max Verstappen’s inheritance of leadership under the red flags and the fairness of the rule that allows tire changes under the red flags. According to the former driver and current reserve for Red Bull, changing tires under red flags works well depending on whose favor it is working.

On the F1 Nation podcast, Albon shared his opinion on the rules that allowed Max Verstappen to take the lead, saying:

“I think it’s difficult when it’s changing all the time, I think it works in a strange way. Because with Lewis in Imola and here it kind of balances out, I think. Without going into the philosophical, the world finds a way to balance itself, as long as it happens in the end, yes. “

Albon noted that the red flag tire change worked well for Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone, Imola and even in Saudi Arabia. The Thai-British racing driver thinks the rule is tricky when the lead is constantly changing, as in Saudi Arabia, where it was initially inherited by Max Verstappen under the first red flag and the second to Lewis Hamilton’s advantage.

Max Verstappen’s legacy of red flag leadership has sparked controversy over the tire change rule

Max Verstappen stayed outside instead of pitting, awaiting the first red flag at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. With that he took over the lead of the race under the safety car, while everyone else stopped to change tires. The Dutchman changed tires under red flags, which gave him an advantage at the restart.

Since the Jeddah race, the red flag tire change rule has attracted attention as it gives some drivers an unfair advantage. While there are many losers in a situation like this, it has benefited many others.

On the question of whether the permission to change tires is fair, said Albon, a former team-mate of Max Verstappen:

“I don’t think it’s fair, but I think it has to be changed by the end of the year. That’s what I think.”

Albon joked about the possibility of a rule change, preferring it to be changed by the end of the 2021 season so he wouldn’t have to grapple with it when he returned to Formula 1 with Williams in 2022.
