Helmut Marko claims that Red Bull is working “tirelessly” to defend Max Verstappen’s 2022 title

Reigning F1 world champion Max Verstappen will be the first driver since Sebastian Vettel in 2014 to use the #1 on his car.

Red Bull special adviser Helmut Marko has claimed that the Milton Keynes team is working “tirelessly” to help Max Verstappen defend his world title. They are working to develop a faster car after extensive rule changes.

In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport about the team’s prospects for the coming season, Marko said:

“It works around the clock. The goal is to win the world title (again), but with such a big rule change you can never be sure. Mercedes and we (Red Bull) have the potential, the people and continuity speak for a duel at the highest level again. Especially since there is no other driver (who can keep up) with Hamilton and Verstappen. ”

Marko says the team can never be sure where it will be compared to rival Mercedes. He added that they are focused on getting the most out of the regulations.

In the meantime, in addition to far-reaching changes in aerophilosophy, the 2022 cars will also feature important changes in the engine department. It will have a new environmentally friendly biofuel introduced to reduce the sport’s carbon footprint.

According to Marko, Red Bull expects a power loss of more than 20 hp from the new fuel. He said the team is working with engine partner Honda to make up for the loss.

“Honda is working hard on the adaptation. What I hear is positive. But the performance is not yet the same as in 2021. In general, you have to wait and see how it looks in racing trim.”

Honda has officially left Formula 1 as an engine supplier and handed over the intellectual property rights of their engine to Red Bull. However, the Japanese manufacturer will continue to work with Red Bull for the foreseeable future. Honda boss of F1 operations Masashi Yamamoto has been linked with a switch to Red Bull powertrains.

Max Verstappen may have to face more challengers in 2022 to defend his title

The far-reaching changes to the regulations for 2022 are an excellent opportunity for teams in the upper midfield to finally take on the battle for the top teams.

The teams that could potentially make life harder for Red Bull and Mercedes include Ferrari and McLaren, with an underdog chance for Alpine and Aston Martin. Each of these four teams have capable driver lineups who can get the most out of a good car to start a title violation.

Red Bull and Mercedes are already cautious of a Ferrari threat, especially after Scuderia made a significant upgrade to their engine in the latter part of the 2021 season.

Even though his DRS didn’t work and was upshifted twice, Max Verstappen still took pole at his home Grand Prix with this great lap.

Meanwhile, McLaren has slowly built its infrastructure over the past few years while attracting new talent. With their strong line-up of drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris, they are well positioned to start a fight for the title in the coming season.

Red Bull has worked hard to give Max Verstappen the best possible chance to defend his world championship. However, with the new rules set to roll out in 2022, they may have more to worry about than just beating Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes this year.
