Max Verstappen didn’t make many fans after his antics at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix and Martin Brundle is one of them.
In his post-race column for Sky Sports, Martin Brundle denounced Verstappen’s driving style and talked about how to take action.
Brundle wrote in his column summarizing the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix:
“Formula 1 has a problem that the design of the racetracks, especially with regard to the ‘safety’ run-off zones, and the sporting regulations simply cannot curb the way in which Max Verstappen is currently racing. The only way the FIA can control him is through endless criticism and the occasional penalty. “
The Sky Sports commentator pointed out a crucial factor behind Max Verstappen’s tactics. Brundle said his lead in the championship allows him to push Lewis Hamilton into situations where the Mercedes driver has to give way. According to Brundle, Verstappen will also help the Red Bull driver maintain this lead in the race in Abu Dhabi.
Jolyon Palmer on Max Verstappen
“Whenever there is an incident, he puts his car in a position that says, ‘either I will drive this corner or neither of us will leave the corner,’ which is an impossible way to drive with anyone.”

Brundle pointed out how Verstappen’s superior skill and ability enabled him to perform marginal movements that created not only confusion but also controversy surrounding his driving. Brundle said in his column:
“Max has so much car control and cunning that he sometimes makes the bold moves and leaves you in doubt whether it is a tough race or just a professional foul outside of the regulations. And it is these moments, like the infamous turn four “in Brazil, that cause confusion, controversy and contradictions.”

Brundle went on to talk about how greats like Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna also had their flaws in the past, with their antics on the track sometimes making a sizeable dent in their legacy.
Brundle believed that Max Verstappen risked being labeled an unfair driver by historians of the sport if he continued to do the same.
