According to German publication Auto Motor und Sport, a former Mercedes employee who now works at Red Bull F1 has leaked information about the controversial rear wing of the Silver Arrows.

According to the reports, the illegality of Mercedes’ rear wing would be difficult to see due to the complexity of its design. However, an element on the wing could violate the technical guidelines on “Flexi-Wings” issued in the summer.

In a video sequence from “Former Schmidt” on Auto Motor und Sport, the experienced F1 journalist Michael Schmidt explained how Red Bull Racing suspected that the rear wing element from Mercedes also offers an advantage when the DRS is closed.

While Red Bull made no formal protest during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, the Silver Arrows could face many questions about their rear wing element at the Qatar Grand Prix.

With three races remaining until the end of the season, the Milton Keynes team will likely keep a close eye on the legality of Mercedes’ unique rear wing and the difference it makes in their performance on the straights.

Red Bull hired Mercedes employees at the beginning of the season

Red Bull has succeeded in poaching some employees from Mercedes High Performance Powertrains for their engine development this season.

According to Schmidt, one of the former employees who had been poached has spoken in detail about their rear wing theory. As a result, Red Bull’s top designer Adrian Newey and technical director Paul Monaghan approached Nickolas Tombazis, head of FIA singles and technical affairs, at the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend.

While the Mercedes rear wing saga is far from over after the Brazilian Grand Prix, one can only wait and see how the story unfolds through the next weekend of the Qatar Grand Prix and possibly beyond.
