David Coulthard on Max Verstappen’s lunge in the fifth lap of the 2021 F1 season finale

F1 Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi - Max Verstappen chases down Lewis Hamilton

Max Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton with a late lunge at Turn 5 to claim the 2021 F1 title on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. During an interview with the sport’s newest champion, host and former Red Bull Racing driver David Coulthard admitted he initially feared the move was at an inopportune time.

Coulthard commented how, in his opinion, Max should have waited until the exit of Turn 5:

“As a commentator watching it, I thought it was too early to do before Turn 5 when you tried Turn 5 before the entrance. Everyone thought you were going too early.”

However, the F1 veteran then praised Max Verstappen, claiming the Dutchman’s judgment was far superior to his own, even in his prime. He said:

“And that confirms how efficient I have been as a racing driver and how efficient you are as a racing driver. You see a gap and drive off. I thought it was too early to do this before Turn 5.”

Max Verstappen felt that overtaking Turn 5 was his best chance to win the F1 title in 2021

Although David Coulthard felt the move to Lewis Hamilton might have come too early, Max Verstappen believes this was his best way to take control of the race and prevent his title rivals from taking the lead back.

The Dutchman knew that at the end of the race he had better pace because of his fresher tires. He said:

“I knew I had a better top speed so once I’m in front I can control the defense. If you’re behind they can always close the door and you’re not in full control. So I felt like that I need it to send it there and then I’m in control. ”

Max Verstappen is scheduled to start again in 2022 and wear the number 1 instead of number 33 as the defending champion on his Red Bull.
