Max Verstappen became F1 World Champion at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but it was nothing short of controversial. The circumstances under which Verstappen took victory enraged Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton fans, but Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes all of this will soon be forgotten by the F1 paddock thanks to their short-lived memories.

As reported by PlanetF1, Horner shares his thoughts on Verstappen’s victory and the reaction to it:

“The people in this business have such a very short memory. We even forgot what happened (earlier in the year). It’s been such a long racing season. Max is an absolutely deserved world champion. If you look at the championship as a whole, of course, the events in Abu Dhabi got a lot of buzz, but that happens in sport. “

As the championship leadership changed hands several times, the 2021 season witnessed one of the most intense battles in F1 history and a new world champion.

“We had a lot of bad luck last year” – Christan Horner looks back on Max Verstappen’s season

Verstappen had several streaks of bad luck, like in Baku and Hungary, which cost him significant championship points through no fault of his own. The two title contenders tied for the final race, and while Hamilton led most of the race, it was luck and strategy that gave Verstappen the championship win.

Horner stated:

“We had a lot of bad luck last year, we were lucky with a safety car, we made the right strategic decisions, a great strategy, great teamwork and a great performance by Max and we won the race. Time will pass. Max is a well deserved world champion, we are incredibly proud of that and the history books will always show that he is the world champion of 2021. ”
