In the fourth episode of the In The Car With series, our own Joe Brown sits in his 1998 Ford Ranger XLT to chat with Aston Martin Red Bull racing driver Alexander Albon. Instead of sitting in a Formula 1 machine (or an Aston Martin), Albon is sitting in his Cool Performance simulator seat, where he spent his time in the Formula 1 virtual Formula 1 Grand Prix during the coronavirus pandemic.
With his success on the virtual Formula 1 tracks, Albon explains why he is more successful online than the 2019 Formula 1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton: “I think that’s probably due to the generation gap. It’s not just about racing, we’re playing Call of Duty or Rocket League: weird things like this just to keep us busy. I think the older people don’t care as much as we do. We just see it as fun. “One of Albon’s series of successful digital races is a win at the Virtual Grand Prix at the Interlagos Circuit.
The 24-year-old Albon also talks about how difficult it is to drive with a simulator than to drive a Formula 1 car, the physical demands of the sport, how to maintain his physical fitness during the quarantine and what it is considered to be selects his or her dream driver every day.
Hear all of this and more in the video above and don’t forget to check for new episodes here or on our Autoweek YouTube channel on Wednesdays.
