Alice Powell takes on Red Bull’s neck strength test

Alice Powell takes on Red Bull's neck strength test

British racing star Alice Powell recently spent the day training like a Formula 1 driver at Red Bull’s MK-7 headquarters.

The 2021 W Series runner-up was filming with Channel 4 for the coverage of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

During her time at the Milton Keynes venue, Powell took on a series of challenges, including the neck strength test.

What F1 tests did Alice Powell do?

Powell enjoyed testing out the facilities in the Red Bull gym and powertrain area. While she is certainly no stranger to keeping her body at optimum fitness when competing in the W Series, she was really put to the test at MK-7.

The Brit started off with a reaction test, which involved her pressing buttons using one hand while in the plank position. She scored a solid 37, which was close to the target of 40 she was set before the challenge.

Next up was the piece of equipment designed to strengthen drivers’ neck muscles.

Powell had to lie flat on her back, rest her forehead against a pad above her and push against it.

She reached up to almost 12 kilos of force while testing her neck strength.

All F1 drivers train their necks as they would any other part of their bodies ahead of races. Strengthening the neck muscles helps to withstand the g-forces experienced while driving at top speeds.

However, some neck training exercises are more brutal than others. You can watch Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, and Nico Hülkenberg taking on an insane neck strengthening exercise below.

How has Alice Powell performed in W Series?

Powell finished third in the overall drivers’ standings this season after the W Series was unfortunately forced to curtail.

The campaign was cut short after the Singapore Grand Prix due to financial difficulties. CEO Catherine Bond Muir had hoped to reach the Circuit of the Americas but ultimately made the decision to end the season in order to protect the longevity of the Championship.

Powell earned four podium places during the 2022 season, including a win in Hungary. She finished the season with a total of 86 points and was very much involved in the race for the Constructors’ Championship with Jess Hawkins for Bristol Street Motors.

The team consisting of the two Brits finished second behind Jenner Racing, who made it a clean sweep of wins thanks to Jamie Chadwick’s unstoppable 143-point championship title triumph.

Powell will return to the grid next year for the fourth season of W Series.
