According to Alex Albon, Red Bull’s spare role is more important than a DTM career

Former Red Bull driver Alexander Albon has shown that his duties as reserve driver are more important to Red Bull than a successful DTM career if he wants to return to Formula 1.

The UK-born Thai driver was sacked by Red Bull at the end of the 2020 season after a series of unconvincing performances. Failing to meet Red Bull’s high standards, Albon signed Team Sergio Perez for the 2021 season. For the first time since signing Mark Webber, Red Bull has looked beyond its young drivers’ program to find their place to occupy.

In an interview with Autosport.com, Albon said that the DTM won’t help his Formula 1 career much:

“A lot of the Formula 1 material probably depends a little more on how other drivers are doing and whether there are opportunities on that side. But yes, there aren’t that many requirements here. “

Alex Albon still wants to be in Formula 1

Although Alex Albon has the opportunity to improve his reputation by performing well in the DTM, he is determined to return to Formula 1. The 25-year-old is aware that fulfilling his duties as reserve driver will be of crucial importance for future opportunities:

“A lot depends on how it works with BoP [in the DTM]. As long as I do my job on my side … Of course, my role is also a much bigger role in reserve driver, in simulator tasks and in testing [in getting back to F1]. ”

When asked whether a long-term career in sports cars was an option, Albon quickly denied:

“Seriously, not really. I mean it’s good for now It keeps me sharp, it keeps me fit, if you can call it that. “But I still want to be in F1. If F1 didn’t work, some sort of … we’ll see. I definitely wouldn’t say no 100%. “

Alex Albon is one of three former Formula 1 drivers who will drive in the DTM this season. Together with the Thai driver, Timo Glock will drive for the BMW Rowe Racing Team and the former Red Bull driver Christian Klien will drive a McLaren for the JP Motorsport Team.
