This weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix will be the newest battleground for Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton’s race for the 2021 F1 title race. Hamilton, who has two points ahead of the Dutchman, wants to extend his lead over the Red Bull driver.
Verstappen is hoping for the exact opposite as he is aiming for victory after falling by the track in the last race in Russia for an engine penalty. Race 16 of the season is expected to bring a surprise or two which could mess up the results quite a bit.
With that in mind, here are the top five reasons why the 2021 Turkish Grand Prix is a must-see:
# 1 Red Bull or Mercedes – who is ahead?
Given that it is a venue that opened in 2020 after a 10-year absence, teams struggled to gain a foothold on the Istanbul Park circuit last year. A brand new track surface turned the pecking order on its head after the drivers found it difficult to get any kind of grip.
As a result, we were treated to the unlikely spectacle of Lance Stroll, who started from pole for Racing Point. Mercedes was nowhere near ultimate speed to begin with, but Hamilton somehow managed to take a win and named the surface “S * it” afterwards!
Although the organizers of the Turkish Grand Prix have assured the teams and drivers that the track surface will not be a cause for concern this time around, the proof, they say, will be in the pudding. Until the cars run a few laps on the track, it’s impossible to predict what will happen.
# 2 We could have a wet Turkish Grand Prix
The 2021 season is one gift that keeps being given, and another one that could well be on the way is the weekend forecast. It just doesn’t look good if you’re a fan of a simple dry race.
According to the weather forecast, it may rain during the Turkish Grand Prix weekend. Should this happen, expect the action on the track to be sprinkled with some unpredictability for additional action.
We had rain several times this season. On those occasions, the cream has risen to the top, with riders like Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris standing out from the crowd.
If the prognosis for the Turkish Grand Prix is correct, we should get another driving master class from one of the usual suspects.
