Max Verstappen won the first sprint race in F1 and took pole position for today’s British Grand Prix. Although Mercedes showed an improvement in pace, Lewis Hamilton couldn’t hold the Dutchman back despite the start that started before him.

With the pole position at Silverstone, Verstappen stopped Mercedes’ qualifying dominance on this track. For the first time in nine years, the Silver Arrows failed to take pole position at the British Grand Prix this weekend.

The defending champion’s dominance at Silverstone is incredible. Before this weekend, the Silver Arrows occupied pole position in every edition of the race since the beginning of the hybrid era. In addition, Nico Rosberg took pole position at Silverstone in 2013, which began its pole position series here.

However, their dominance doesn’t stop with qualifying. Since 2014, Hamilton has won every edition of the British Grand Prix except 2018. Sebastian Vettel, who started for Ferrari in 2018, is the only other winner of the race in the hybrid era.
Ferrari also took the last non-Mercedes pole at Silverstone, with Fernando Alonso in 2012. Despite starting from pole, Mark Webber won the race for Red Bull’s last British Grand Prix win that year.

Although Hamilton lost Verstappen to pole position in qualifying on Friday, the Dutchman flew off the line to win yesterday’s sprint race. If Red Bull had to prove its title one more time, yesterday’s sprint race couldn’t make it clearer. Although Verstappen didn’t win the Great Britain Grand Prix last season, he did win the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix on the same track.

After four straight wins, the Dutchman seems an all-time favorite to break Hamilton’s winning streak here. However, you can’t figure the British out if a lot of people are cheering him on from the stands.
