Red Bull F1 team advisor Dr. Helmut Marko claimed that the Milton Keynes team would be level with Mercedes at the top in the 2022 season. The Austrian senior talent scout suggests that the two teams compete against each other next season unless an underdog team emerges, similar to Brawn F1 in 2009.
In an interview with the German broadcaster ServusTV, Dr. Marko:
“At the moment we believe that we are almost on a par with Mercedes. The engine will also change significantly [with synthetic fuel being introduced]. That is a drastic change. We think we’ll both be in front again, unless someone creates a golden shot like with the double diffuser. “
The rule changes in 2022 mean different cars, and their engine will also change significantly, according to the adviser to the Austrian team. Although Honda has its 2022 engine already ready, it will be an upgrade from its 2021 version and will be adapted to the new 2022 specification F1 cars.
Dr. However, Marko believes the only strange situation in the Red Bull and Mercedes F1 title fight is when a third team or underdog shows up, as it did in 2009 when the Brawn F1 team challenged the field with a rare double diffuser concept and dominated.
