The 2021-22 edition of Formula E is almost in full swing, with the sport on the 29th. The start of the 4-day test event was of course quite peaceful, with hardly any incidents on the first day.

On day 2, however, something interesting happened to one of the Mercedes EQ drivers. Stoffel Vandoorne, who is also the substitute driver for the Mercedes F1 team, almost caused a bad accident with several cars on the main straight of the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia thanks to the repetition of Mitch Evans’ Berlin E-Prix 2021.
What did the Mercedes F1 test driver do?

After the day’s run, the cars rolled onto the main straight for a race start simulation. All cars lined up in a random position on the grid, with Vandoorne taking P4 right behind Evans. As on a normal racing day, the lights went out.
What followed, however, was any driver’s worst nightmare; Anti-stall, or at least we think it was anti-stall.
Evans was rooted to the spot while the rest of the drivers were already on the accelerator. We assume that the heart of the entire Mercedes garage was in its mouth when Vandoorne almost crashed into the rear of the Jaguar.
Fortunately, the drivers managed to spot the jaguar blocked and stayed away from Evans. Some of the drivers only avoided the car by an inch, but well, the bottom line is all that matters. Vandoorne is safe, Evans and pretty much all the drivers who started on the dirty part of the track!
Eventually, Mercedes used social media to reveal a snippet of Evans’ Start. They continued to write, “Well … that was pretty close!”
Flashback from the Berlin E-Prix?
At the time, Kiwi racing driver Mitch Evans was on the verge of clinching the Formula E title in 2021, having qualified on a strong P3, while his rival Nyck de Vries qualified well behind the top 10. Then, however, came a shocking turnaround when the light came off.
Evans’ Jaguar stayed on the grid while the rest of the grid raced. Commentators knew a crash was imminent, considering that the main straight isn’t necessarily a straight, but a right-hand bend. As a result, most drivers had limited visibility.

Edoardo Mortara rightly came scorching hot and pushed his car onto the rear of the Jaguar, taking them both out of the race. Yes, it was actually the moment when Evans’ title hopes slipped out of his hands. But in the end it didn’t really matter because the driver’s safety was a top priority and he was safe.
