There have been tremendously good drivers participating in Formula 1 over the years. Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are the record champions with seven titles each behind their names, but drivers like Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Juan Manuel Fangio and Jackie Stewart were also of great class (and no doubt we are forgetting a lot). Max Verstappen does not want to name who he thinks is the best ever.
The Red Bull Racing driver is asked about the greatest sportsman of all time. “I always find it difficult to say something like that, there have been so many great drivers in Formula 1,” Verstappen said in an interview on his employer’s website.
Even if we pull it a little wider and include several sports, the 24-year-old Dutchman does not know who to point out as the best athlete. “Then I feel I have to say even more: no idea.”
Hamilton can trump Schumacher
Hamilton, currently 37 years old, can statistically become at least the best Formula One driver ever. The Briton is still under contract with Mercedes until 2023, so he has at least two more chances to win an eighth world championship. In that case, he would leave Michael Schumacher behind for good.
