The notorious Mercedes one-stop strategy in the two-stop race cost both drivers a lot of money. Hamilton’s championship rivals took the win, while Bottas lost the podium.
Valtteri Bottas’ angry team radio
The fans felt for Bottas after listening to his team radio. The Mercedes driver had warned his team about the strategy; both Red Bulls pitted for the second time and thus gained an advantage over the Silver Arrows. Bottas, who finished second, eventually lost his place to the faster Red Bulls. Thereupon Bottas expressed his frustration: “Why the hell no one listens to me when I say that it will be a two-stopper?”
Bottas endured his anger well after the race. He commented: “If I had made two stops, I would have been on the podium for sure, fighting for victory in the race. That’s for sure.”

Valtteri didn’t think he was being too tough on his team on the radio. They ignored his predictions and it had cost them the race. “I made it very clear what I was thinking. I had suggested two stops at the beginning of the race, but the team decided it would be one stop. So we made a stopover. “
Arguments from Mercedes
On the contrary, Mercedes argued they had no choice but to pit Bottas earlier. Red Bull punched Verstappen after Bottas’ stop on lap 17; Verstappen’s strong undercut helped him take the lead from Hamilton. This track position later helped the team with the successful two-stop strategy.
Team boss Toto Wolff explained the situation: “We knew that we would trigger the stops too early, but [we had] No choice.”

The win at Paul Ricard helped Verstappen to extend his championship lead. The Mercedes strategist apologized to Hamilton on the radio. He said, “This is on us. Thank you for doing everything you can to restore this race. “
Before the next triple header, which resumes the season, Bottas certainly expects a happy break with the team.
