Valtteri Bottas claims to be unbeatable at his best but feels his best days are very rare. The Finn remembered his five years at Mercedes, during which he won numerous pole positions and races for the Brackley-based team.
“The basic level as a driver like Lewis is so high that it is quite difficult to consistently beat him.”
“Lewis is the best driver in Formula 1 history. To know that I can beat him sometimes is a nice thing.”

Valtteri Bottas has been an important part of the Mercedes unit since former world champion Nico Rosberg left the team after winning the title in 2016. Since then, the Finn has won a total of 10 wins, 20 pole positions, 58 podiums and five consecutive constructors’ titles for Mercedes. Speaking to The Race, he said:
“To be honest, I have the feeling that on my best days, be it races or qualifying, I am unbeatable. But unfortunately I don’t always have the best days. Can’t say I exceeded all of my expectations. Personally, I have pretty high expectations of myself. Maybe a little too high. I cannot say that I have exceeded everything. Of course, when I feel like I’ve failed, I didn’t manage to win the drivers’ championship. But it wasn’t easy on Lewis’ side. He always had the upper hand. “
Lewis Hamilton outperformed Valtteri Bottas on almost every opportunity, the Finnish driver being known to struggle with race speed despite having the most powerful car year after year.
However, all was not lost for the 32-year-old, as he finished second in the drivers’ championship in both 2019 and 2020, ahead of drivers like Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel.
Bottas has tested 2022 cars in simulators for both Mercedes and future Team Alfa Romeo, claiming the cars feel “about the same” despite numerous rule changes.
Lewis Hamilton claims Valtteri Bottas is “a perfect teammate”
In a touching social media tribute to his teammate, Lewis Hamilton praised Valtteri Bottas as a driver and person, calling him the perfect teammate for his efforts. The Finn often placed P2 behind Hamilton, which helped him secure his lead over the rest of the field in both the races and the drivers’ standings.

The seven-time world champion said of his Mercedes team-mate:
“He was the best teammate I’ve had the pleasure to work with. Your speed and resilience were impressive, but what really sets you apart is who you are. You are bigger than you think and I know that you have a bright future ahead of you. ”
