US Grand Prix 2021, F1 live: the latest updates from Austin

And since we are in 2021, we are all well prepared for another exciting race in which Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton will compete in first and second places again. Here is Phil Duncan with a quick recap of what happened in qualifying yesterday.

L.ewis Hamilton is hoping to get through the first corner of the United States Grand Prix on Sunday in one go while lining up in the front row alongside championship rival Max Verstappen.

Verstappen will have the advantage of starting from pole position after beating his Mercedes competitor by two tenths to the top spot on the hot Circuit of Americas in Austin.

Hamilton and Verstappen have collided twice this season – at Silverstone and Monza – and the uphill climb to the first left-hand bend, the widest opening bend of the year, could cause more fireworks.

“I hope we can get through the first corner and have a good race,” said Hamilton.

“It’s all fun and games. We’ll have fun tomorrow and give everything as you expect it to be. It’s not really different from other parts of the season.”

The Circuit of the Americas has been a happy area for Hamilton and Mercedes in the past.

Hamilton secured his third and sixth world titles here in 2015 and 2019 and triumphed in five of his eight appearances in Austin. A Mercedes has started from pole position in every race since 2014.

But Hamilton, six points behind Verstappen in his quest for a record-breaking eighth title, had no answer when the Dutchman reached his 12th pole.

“Sorry guys,” said Hamilton over the radio after finishing 0.209 seconds behind Verstappen.

However, the Briton, who finished fourth after the first rounds in Q3, will consoled himself with the separation of the two Red Bulls in favor of third Sergio Perez.

The return of Formula 1 to the USA – after the race was canceled last year due to the pandemic – was received with spectacular enthusiasm.

120,000 spectators followed the qualifying, while 140,000 are expected for the race on Sunday.

As always, we’ll be here for the build, the action, and the reaction. The race starts at 8 p.m.
