Tsunoda, Stroll Set for Mexican F1 GP Penalties

Tsunoda, Stroll Set for Mexican F1 GP Penalties

Both Tsunoda and Stroll are taking a fourth combustion engine, turbocharger and MGU-H from their respective engine manufacturers Honda and Mercedes with them for the event.

Tsunoda will also use a fourth MGU-K system, while Stroll will add a third control electronics suite to its pool.

With the engine limit of three per season, both drivers fall back on the back of the grid for the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Both drivers will also take a new exhaust, as will Red Bull’s home driver Sergio Perez. Perez will switch to his seventh exhaust system in 2021, but with the limit set at eight units per season, it won’t cost him any starting places for his home race.

Tsunoda and Stroll are not the first drivers to impose a starting field penalty in the 2021 season for using more units than allowed.

Since the two championship contenders Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have also received fines at previous events, the debate over the past few weeks has flared up over whether starting penalties are the right solution for limiting engine use.

Both drivers are confident that they can get through the remaining five races without any further problems, although Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has admitted that his squad is struggling with reliability this season as the team’s second driver, Valtteri Bottas, is already there has six engines for the season.

“I think you can see that we are suffering from reliability this year,” said Wolff at the US Grand Prix.

“We’re going to the sixth engine, I think it’s for Valtteri and we didn’t choose it.

“On the contrary, we are really trying to get the problems under control, and we did not get it [them] fully.

“I think we are now one step closer, so it is not always that we are literally easy with the engines.

“We are committed to supplying all customers, and that is not trivial.”

Other drivers hit by penalties are Perez, Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso from Alpine, the other Aston Martin from Sebastian Vettel and both cars from fellow Mercedes Williams.
