Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said he shouldn’t even have responded to Christian Horner’s “rude” remarks in Azerbaijan.
While Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen fought on the track, Wolff and Horner did the same as the title race between the two teams spiced up further.
In Baku, amid a dispute over the legality of Red Bull’s rear flexi-wing, Horner suggested that Wolff “shut up” when drawing attention to the movement of the front wing of the Mercedes W12.
Wolff responded by calling Horner “a windsock” and telling him to be more humble as Red Bull led both world championships after six rounds of the 2021 season.
In retrospect, Wolff wishes he hadn’t taken note of these first comments from Horner.

“Last week I shouldn’t even have responded,” said Wolff David Coulthard in an interview for Channel 4.
“He was rude and I responded [to that]but in the end I don’t care and I don’t pay attention.
“We’re not Hollywood actors, well, not all of us. I just want to concentrate on the team and ourselves and do the best possible job in my role. “
It was rare for Mercedes to be challenged so much during the turbo hybrid era, and Wolff said this was a new experience for a fairly high percentage of his team.
“30 percent of our population have never lost a World Cup,” revealed Wolff.
“That’s good in a way, but this year it’s a completely different challenge when you feel like you’re just not being fast enough. We just try to do our best and develop ourselves further in order to be able to keep up in this championship. “
Wolff was inevitably asked about the respective futures of Valtteri Bottas and George Russell during the interview.
Wolff replied, “I think we owe Valtteri and he to us and we are doing solid races. Then we make a point of saying, “What actually happened and what are we going to do next year?”
“George is obviously a logical choice. There’s no one else around, so it’s between these two [for the Mercedes seat alongside Lewis Hamilton]. “
