Toto Wolff: “Minimal variance” in car designs in 2022

Toto Wolff: "Minimal variance" in car designs in 2022

Toto Wolff has admitted with some dismay that the design of the 2022 cars will be “so limited” and that the differences between them will mostly be cosmetic.

On the eve of the British Grand Prix weekend, a prototype of the new 2022 F1 car with 18-inch tires and a front wing with integrated end plates was presented in Silverstone.

The cars with ground-effect aerodynamics should enable better and more exciting races, as they should follow closer and thus be able to overtake more easily.

However, Wolff, co-owner and team principal of Mercedes F1, believes the cars – which he compared to something he envisioned in McLaren CEO Zak Brown’s garage – will look very similar due to the strict regulations and limit the main differences to theirs are color schemes.

“I think you will get very slight variations on a theme,” said the Austrian, quoted by GP fans. “The regulations are now so tight that the differences between the cars will really be minimal.

“The differences will undoubtedly be under the skin of the car, which is a shame we’re going down a path where the shape is so limited and the paintwork will be the biggest differentiator between the cars.

“They look kind of retro. It looks like a 1990s IndyCar, some of the stuff Zak keeps a garage full of. I think the car looks pretty cool, but it looks pretty retro. “

Brown, meanwhile, missed the Silverstone presentation after contracting COVID-19 and self-isolating, but is obviously familiar with what to expect from McLaren over the next year.

“I do not think so [they will be] radically different because we all play by very strict rules, so I’ve seen what ours looks like – it’s subtly different, ”said the American.

“What they showed is a pretty good representation when you look at the car from 15 meters away.

“As with all Formula 1 cars, if you look in detail, you can see all the differences.

“Of course I didn’t see the car live, only visually. Hopefully it’s a better racing car and it’ll do what it’s supposed to do to bring racing closer. “
