Niki Lauda was an important presence in the Mercedes garage. He had developed a good relationship with everyone in the team, and team boss Toto Wolff had a special friendship with the late Mercedes consultant. Just like his friendship with the three-time world champion, Wolff has a special bond with Niki’s son Mathias.

In an interview with Servus TV, the Mercedes team boss remembered how Mathias was the first to see that Susie and Toto had a connection. He also talked about the influence Mathias has on his life and how important he is for Wolff.

Mathias was the first to notice that Susie and I are personable: Toto Wolff
As Motorsport-Total reports, Wolff said in an interview about the solidarity he has with Mathias Lauda, Niki’s son: “We have known each other for a while, of course.”

“I followed Matthias’ career live right from the start and then of course in the DTM. In the end, I think he was the first to notice that Susie and I are personable, ”said Wolff.
Mathias remembered the incident: “That was at the presentation in Düsseldorf. I noticed that straight away. “Mathias and Susie, Toto’s wife, were team-mates in the DTM for two years.

Mercedes keeps the red star as a tribute to Lauda
At the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix, Mercedes added a red star to its paintwork to honor Niki Lauda. The German team kept the red star on their car in the hope of immortalizing the deceased Mercedes advisor.

Toto Wolff has stated that Mercedes will keep the Lauda star on their paintwork forever. “Of course there are marketing experts here who think it’s not a corporate identity, a red star, it has to be silver.
“The red star will always be on every Mercedes racing car in Formula 1,” said Wolff.
