The FIA explains why Perez was not investigated for violating the Turkish F1 bollard

At the end of lap 34, the couple ran side by side through the final corners and Perez walked far into the pit entrance. Then he passed the wrong side of the bollard before returning to the track.

The Mexican then managed to stay ahead of Hamilton in Turn 1.

Some observers thought Perez might get into trouble for leaving the track and going behind the bollard before rejoining and saving his position.

Masi says he looked at the Perez incident but there hasn’t been a formal investigation as it wasn’t an aborted stop – with Hamilton receiving a reprimand for such a crime in Germany in 2018.

“I checked it out, absolutely,” he said.

“But as stated in our regulations, you only have to keep to the left of the bollard when entering the pit lane.

“So nothing in it. It was a good, tough race between the two of them. Strangely enough, none of the teams asked the question, neither Mercedes nor Red Bull. Good tough fight, keep playing. “

Immediately after the incident there was no comment from either driver, although later on the following lap Perez said, “He pushed me away,” to which his race engineer replied, “Copy Checo, great defense.”

Typically, drivers sometimes make such comments in order to defend their actions against the race control.

However, as Masi noted, neither Red Bull nor Mercedes called on the radio to suggest that the other driver was to blame for the incident.

“[Perez’s] Team didn’t pass on a word, ”said Masi.

“We don’t hear every car radio. And in general, the teams are very good at that, as you all know, the radio panel lights up very quickly when there is a problem that needs to be checked! “

After the race, there was no further evidence from Perez that he was deported.

“The first stint was so difficult for me, especially towards the end and Lewis was pretty quick,” he said. “I think he was the fastest car on the track at the time, so it was quite difficult to hold him back at that point.

“We had a good fight. Even had to avoid the pit bollard when entering the pit, but overall it was a good fight and I managed to stay ahead. “
