The development of low profile F1 tires continues

Pirelli’s 18-inch tires for the Mercedes F1 car at the end of 2019

According to Pirelli’s head of motorsport, Mario Isola, the development of 18-inch tires for the 2022 Formula 1 season is going well.

The teams currently have 13-inch wheels in their cars, but the introduction of new regulations next year will see these increase significantly.

Formula 2 has already switched while the Italian tire supplier stayed in Bahrain after the season opener last month to continue testing.

“We had one day with Ferrari and two days with Alpine, all with the racing drivers,” said Isola of the test.

“It was very helpful to confirm what we’ve seen in the past.

“We’re in the process of finalizing the construction and tread for the slick tire and it’s been a good conformation with both cars.”

Further tests are planned; In fact, it has spent the last two days in Imola while Mercedes was working on the slick tires.

Next month there will be two days in Barcelona with Alpine, Red Bull and Alfa Romeo before there will be wet tests with Mercedes later in the month at Paul Ricard.

Four more tests are also planned. The final will take place in mid-September at Magny-Cours in France.

“Of course we are also interested in testing not only on different tracks but also on different cars as we have new cars that should be representative of next year’s cars, but we don’t know until we start next season but the conformation is good again, “explained Isola.

“We have tested some constructions and have a new basis for Imola. All in all i’m happy.

“When I look at the goals that were set more than a year ago, it is obvious that a tire with a larger working area, less weight and a degree of deterioration was agreed upon so that certain characteristics are also available to drivers and listeners that better meets driver expectations. “
