We’ll never know how the race would have gone if weather conditions had allowed it, but a breathtakingly quick lap from Russell in Q3 saw him start from the front row for the first time in his Williams.
After the race itself was a slip up and the decision was made to award half points, Russell took his first F1 podium to crown a weekend overtaking Hamilton in a much slower car.
The potential for friction between Hamilton and Russell is there as both will be hungry for success in 2022.
It could be reminiscent of the infamous rivalry between Hamilton and Fernando Alonso at McLaren in 2007, a year in which both were eventually defeated by Raikkonen in his Ferrari.
But Russell has claimed he doesn’t put personal ambition above the team’s interests.
“My ambitions and goals are incredibly clear and I want to become F1 World Champion, but I would never put my own agenda or goals above the team, no matter who my teammate is,” he said.
