Williams racing driver George Russell paid tribute to team founder Sir Frank Williams after the F1 legend died at the age of 79. Williams confirmed the icon’s death on Sunday afternoon.

Next to a picture of Sir Frank, Russell tweeted, “Today we’re saying goodbye to the man who defined our team. Sir Frank was such a wonderful person and I will always remember our laughs together.

“He was more than a boss, he was a mentor and friend to everyone who joined the Williams Racing family and many others.”

In another tweet, the 23-year-old added, “It was a real honor for him to race and be a small part of the incredible legacy he leaves, a legacy that will live on in heart and soul becomes a team.

“Rest in peace, Sir Frank. Thank you for everything.”

In 1977 Sir Frank Williams founded and remained a team principle until last year. He first got into Formula 1 in 1969 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019.

He suffered from a longstanding health struggle and was hospitalized in December 2020.

A spinal cord injury in 1986 made him unable to walk and was moved in a wheelchair.

Williams Racing confirmed his death in an emotional statement.

“For those who wish to pay tribute, we ask for donations in lieu of gifts to the Spinal Injuries Association.

“Alternatively, we’d love to place flowers at the entrance to the team headquarters in Grove, Oxfordshire. Details of the funeral service will follow in due course. “

Williams star Russell has been driving for the team since 2019.

He is slated to join Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes before the next season.
