A bodyguard who works for Sergio Perez’s family is said to have been shot dead in an attempted car theft in Mexico, according to local reports.

In a video posted on Facebook by Guardia Nocturna, local media reported that a member of the family’s security was injured during the incident in the Ladrón de Guevara neighborhood of his hometown Guadalajara parish.

The news came just moments before Perez was due to qualify for the Monaco Grand Prix with Red Bull for the fifth round of the championship. Before the race on Sunday he was able to secure ninth place on the grid.

Perez announced after the meeting that the person was in “good condition” and confirmed that his family was unharmed during the incident.

“Basically they tried to rob the car of my safety and they shot one of my security guards,” said the 31-year-old.

“But they were basically trying to rob the car and nothing else [is] Come on. He’s in a good condition. The police got the robbers. My family is good, thank you. “

Before the weekend, Perez said, “All the pressure comes from me.

“I really want to exploit the maximum vehicle potential in which the team is active. The team didn’t put any pressure on me, I know what kind of job I have to do so they don’t have to tell me what to do.

“The responsibility lies with myself, it is my maximum to deliver. It’s not mostly about helping Max, it’s about delivering, being where the car needs to be in the fight. It’s that simple. I have to be where the car deserves, and I couldn’t do that last weekend.

“I think if we take Barcelona out of the equation there is nothing to worry about. I think Barcelona finished on Saturday for other reasons but if we take this race away there are some positives and a lot of progress has been made.

“These days track time is very limited. When you start the weekend you go into practice and really have to be there. You don’t have a lot of time to even make a change or compromise. We go into the race pretty blindly on Sunday.

“It is what it is, it’s the same for everyone at the end of the day, it just makes it harder for the riders who changed teams with this limited track time. So for me it doesn’t make very much sense to go any other direction as Max has proven his direction works well and I definitely see good potential if I get there. “
