Former Formula 1 driver Jacques Villeneuve says it’s sad to see four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel fight for the championship, but thinks it’s “crazy” to think he’ll quit the sport just because he’s below average is.
Vettel has had some tough seasons at Ferrari and after being eliminated from the Italian team, he didn’t do much better at Aston Martin without a top 10 finish in the first four races.
Monaco appeared to be a turning point for the German, however, a place he had previously won twice as he started from eighth on the grid just behind Lewis Hamilton.
Vettel managed a spectacular overcut in the race on both Hamilton and Pierre Gasly and crossed the finish line in Monte Carlo in fifth.
Vettel is currently 11th overall with 10 points, Villeneuve praised his performance, but warned the Germans clearly.

Max Verstappen warned in the battle for Lewis Hamilton
“He made the difference there. The car is not what you expected. The old Mercedes doesn’t work with the new rules and as a team they can’t develop it. “
Some have suggested that Vettel, 33, should retire after losing his seat to Carlos Sainz Junior earlier in the season.
However, Villeneuve rejected this, stating that at the end of the day it was a “job”.
When asked if he should resign, the 1997 world champion replied: “Why? He’s in Formula 1 and makes a lot of money.
“It doesn’t matter that he’s a four-time world champion.
“People always say, ‘Oh, he’s not winning, he should step down’. But it’s also a real job. Racing is fun, but it’s also a job that you pay for your kids’ education with.
“So if you can still drive in Formula 1, if you are competitive, enjoy driving and earn millions in the process, why should you step down if you are not afraid of dying or something?
“That’s always the craziest question I’m asked.”
