Aston Martin F1’s Sebastian Vettel was spotted wearing LGBTQ + friendly shoes at the pre-race media briefing for the 2021 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix at Jeddah International Circuit.
Saudi Arabia, along with the entire Middle East, has received a lot of criticism for its cases of human rights abuses and severe repression against the LGBTQ + community.
Along with the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, hosting an entire leg of the Formula 1 calendar in the Middle East has drawn some attention. The organization of races in these parts of the world is in stark contrast to the efforts of Formula 1, which focuses on raising awareness and solidarity with its #WeRaceAsOne campaign.
The appearance of Sebastian Vettel, who wears shoes in LGBTQ + colors, sends a positive signal to the global community. Its importance lies in the fact that, while Formula 1 is hosting a race in the Middle East, it has not given up its values and the message it is trying to spread.
Sebastian Vettel supports Lewis Hamilton in supporting the LGBTQ + community
Sebastian Vettel won’t be the only driver in the LGBTQ + colors at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix. His Mercedes F1 counterpart Lewis Hamilton has also unveiled a special helmet for the LGBTQ + community that will be seen in the final two races.
Hamilton has been very open to promoting inclusivity and spearheading diversity in Formula 1 for some time.
This weekend, the first ever Formula 1 race will take place not only on the Jeddah Circuit, but also in Saudi Arabia. With its long straights after Monza, the newly built track is said to be the second fastest track on the F1 calendar. Since this is a street circuit, you also need to see how the proximity of the walls affects the race.
