Mick Schumacher has announced his intention to ensure that his family name will one day be at the top of the record books when Lewis Hamilton wins his eighth world title this weekend or in the coming years. With another championship crown, the Briton would overshadow the record of seven career titles that he currently shares with the legendary Michael Schumacher.
Hamilton has already set records for race wins, podium places and pole positions, so that he is only one championship win away from total mathematical supremacy.
Unless Hamilton already has a strong claim to be the greatest the sport has ever seen, he will if he wins another world title.
But it would not wash away the achievements of the German who delighted so many younger drivers with his speed and talent on the track.
For son Mick, Schumacher will always be the best that Formula 1 has ever seen – even if Hamilton overtakes his world championship record.
He’s biased, of course, but says he won’t lose any sleep in his father’s record falls.

He was showered with an uncompetitive Haas car for his debut season, meaning he had no chance of showing his talent on the track.
Schumacher will continue the team in 2022 and hopes the new era of technical rules will help the team run a more competitive car and have better chances of scoring points.
Meanwhile, Hamilton’s title rival Max Verstappen has also been compared to Schumacher Senior – but warned against ruining his reputation if he push his fight with the British too far.
“I think we saw how desperate both drivers are to win,” said former Formula 1 racing driver Anthony Davidson.
“Lewis has the experience, been there and done things that I’m sure he will regret now, but he has that in his armory.
“It’s more for Max’s sake that he doesn’t do anything that harms his reputation and that he could internally regret it for the rest of his career.
“Michael Schumacher sailed pretty close to the edge when it came to the tricks he played in the car, and that divides opinions quite a bit.
“Both drivers have to defend hard, drive hard, to the edge, to the limit and do everything to stay ahead – but hopefully without raising their eyebrows.”
