SAM BIRD says Formula E is still a massive uproar – even though BMW, Audi and Mercedes are all pulling the plug on the series.
The German trio is all leaving the fully electric series, Mercedes is postponing the withdrawal until the end of the next season.

Sam Bird says Formula E is still a big hit despite a team exodus
Bird, 34, who has been in FE since season one, says the sport is getting stronger as it approaches its eighth campaign, which begins in January.
He said: “It’s sad at first to hear big teams leave. Nobody wants that, but it’s an integral part of world championship level motorsport.
“You get people who come in and then people go. This is the cycle.
“You can’t expect a competitive series to keep people happy, especially not with four major German manufacturers.
“It was always a question of when someone was leaving, but Formula E is already talking to people to fill those gaps.
“It’s still a healthy championship and I don’t see much of a problem at all.”

While F1 is enjoying increasing popularity thanks to the Netflix series Drive to Survive, FE will soon also have its own fly-on-the-wall documentary.
And Bird, a former test driver on the Mercedes F1 team, says no comparisons should be made between the two series.
He added, “I don’t really focus on what other series are doing. As for F1, it’s none of our business, they are on their own path.
“F1 has been around for decades and has built the story of the teams, cars and drivers.
“We are currently entering the eighth season and what we have achieved in such a short time is fantastic.
“We’re starting to get a story and a fan base from these drivers. People have now won over 10 races, which is a big step.
“So it takes time to create these hero characters, and F1 has such a story that it’s easier for this series.”

As Bird approaches his eighth season in FE, he now hopes that with the technical power of Jaguar behind him, he can win his first world title.
He said: “I think the car Jaguar gave me and Mitch Evans to race gives us the best chance of winning Jaguar’s first world title in a long time, absolutely.
“And my first drivers title. There is no reason to believe that it won’t.”
