Williams Grand Prix Engineering driver George Russell will jump back behind the wheel of a Mercedes later today when he takes part in a tire test after the race in Hungary.
The popular Englishman will test a Mercedes equipped with the 2022 18-inch tires that will be used in the championship next year.
It is not the first test that Russell will take for the Mercedes F1 team during his active F1 career, having also completed tests in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi for the Silver Arrows in 2019.
He had previously completed his first F1 test in a Mercedes W08 on the Hungaroring in 2017.
Of course, Russell is famously driving for the team when Lewis Hamilton tested positive for COVID-19.
The 23-year-old led most of the race after overtaking pole sitter Valtteri Bottas at the start of the race and continued to lead much of the encounter.
A tire mix-up towards the end of the race resulted in Russell being fitted with a pair of Bottas tires, forcing the Briton to make an unscheduled stop before a puncture towards the end of the race cost him his chance of victory.
Today’s test will certainly be followed with great interest as Mercedes is currently considering whether to add Russell to their team or keep Bottas for a sixth season.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has said frankly that a decision will likely be made during the summer break.
The test comes just two days after Russell emotionally scored his first points for Williams by finishing eighth in the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The points lift Williams to eighth place in the constructors’ championship ahead of Alfa Romeo.
Russell will not be alone in the test with Ferrari and McLaren will also compete in Budapest.
