Russell ready to achieve "greatest success" in Formula 1 - Williams' Capito | F1

On Tuesday morning, Mercedes finally announced Russell to replace Valtteri Bottas for the next year and beyond.

The 23-year-old will team up with seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton to form an all-British pairing at Mercedes.

Russell earned his promotion after three impressive seasons with Williams in which he was not overqualified by any of his teammates.

Russell brought Williams onto the podium for the first time since 2017 at the Belgian Grand Prix and was able to move significantly away from Alfa Romeo in the race for eighth place in the constructors’ championship.

In light of the news, Williams team principal praised Capito Russell for his contribution to the team since 2019.

“For the past three years, everyone at Williams has realized how dedicated, focused and talented George is in contributing to the team both on and off the track,” said Capito.

“He has all the necessary qualities to achieve the greatest success in our sport, and that’s why we are happy for him as a team and for me personally that he is being rewarded with the opportunity to test himself at Mercedes. We will follow his progress with interest and pride, knowing the role Williams played in developing his remarkable skills. “

Williams has not yet announced its driver line-up for 2022, Nicholas Latifi is expected to stay for a third season.

Alexander Albon was highly recommended as a partner of Latifi, while Nyck de Vries is also in the frame.

“We were of course aware that this option would come into play, so we have a number of strong driver options available,” he added. “We are now looking forward to shaping our future line-up that will help us take the next step on our exciting journey as a team and will make any announcement in due course.”
