Mercedes is on the verge of announcing George Russell’s signing for 2022 and beyond, according to a growing number of Formula 1 experts in Europe.
British commentators Martin Brundle and David Croft, as well as 1996 Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill, all admit they expect the news to be officially released at the British GP this weekend.
“Then the game is over for Valtteri (Bottas),” said racing driver and Finnish racing expert Toni Vilander to the European media company MTV. “You could see that it was already in his head.”

“The most important thing for Mercedes was to confirm that Hamilton would remain part of the team. So now the main pillar is in place. I don’t think Russell would like to sign another Williams deal. You could say that it will be Hamilton’s two-year deal be last, in which case the next champion will be raised next to him.
“Unfortunately, these are all things that Valtteri has little control over.”
Hamilton signed a two-year extension last week to stay with Mercedes until at least 2023.
If 23-year-old Russell receives the appointment, Nico Hulkenberg or Daniil Kvyat – both F1 reserve drivers this year – should be in the running to replace Russell at Williams. Bottas, 31, has also been linked with a return to Williams as well as Alfa Romeo.
“I’m in constant contact with Mercedes,” said Russell. “They always took care of me. No matter what, I’ll have a Mercedes engine behind me next year. I am a Mercedes driver. I am loyal to you good work, you will be rewarded. ‘ As simple as that.”
