Romain Grosjean will test a Mercedes F1 car after the French GP

A terrible, fiery fall at the Bahrain Grand Prix last year forced Romain Grosjean’s Formula 1 career to end prematurely. The Frenchman was unable to recover and return for the last two 2020 Grand Prix, but in good faith Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff Grosjean promised one last try in an F1 car. Wolff kept his word and Mercedes announced today that Grosjean will drive demonstration laps in a W10 with a full post-race test ahead of the French Grand Prix.

Grosjean visited the Mercedes F1 headquarters at the end of March to carry out a seat adjustment and a run in the simulator. His test is scheduled for June 29th – exactly six months after his accident – on the Paul Ricard racetrack in southern France. The car he will drive is Lewis Hamilton’s 2019 W10 title winner, although the car he is pictured in here is Mercedes’ 2021 challenger, the W12.

“The idea first came when it looked like Romain was about to end his active career in Formula 1 and we didn’t want his accident to be his last moment in an F1 car,” Wolff said in a statement. “I’ve known Romain since he was in Formula Three when he won the championship. He had a long and successful F1 career and we wanted to make sure that his last memories are behind the wheel of a car that won the championship.”

“I am very grateful to Mercedes F1 and Toto for the opportunity,” said Grosjean. “The first time I heard of the opportunity to drive a Mercedes was in my hospital bed in Bahrain when Toto spoke to the media and made the invitation. Reading this news cheered me up very much!”

Grosjean currently drives street and road courses in the 2021 NTT Data IndyCar series with Dale Coyne Racing. Thankfully, there’s a nice little void in the IndyCar schedule that allows Grosjean to test in France without missing out on races.
