The F1 world was united in early May and was delighted with the great news that Romain Grosjean will return to the track on a day of testing with Mercedes after his terrible accident at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix. The French will complete a demo in Lewis Hamilton’s 2020 W10 at the French Grand Prix on June 27 and a test at the same track two days later.
A terrible accident
Grosjean is fortunate to be still alive after the shocking crash that split Haas in two and burst into flames after hitting a barrier. The Frenchman suffered severe burns on his hands, but luckily he was able to escape from the burning rubble and it was the thought of his 3 children that made one “additional piece of strength and energy to jump out“.
Restoration
It was not an easy recovery, either physically or mentally, but the 35-year-old said working quickly with his psychologist after the accident had proven crucial and this made him feel “at home” once he did sat behind the wheel again. Grosjean commented that he “didn’t want to end this crash” and called for Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff to promise during his hospital stay that he could spend a day in the car if he could do it.
Wolff commented on his promise: “We are very excited to support Romain on this special occasion. The idea came when it looked like Romain was about to end his active career in F1 and we didn’t want his accident to be his last moment in an F1 car. “” Romain’s accident reminds us of the dangers these guys face exposed every time they step into the cockpit, but it’s also testament to the incredible steps the sport has taken over the year to improve safety. I know the F1 community will celebrate seeing Romain back on track. “
A special day for Mercedes
It will be a special day for Grosjean, his family, Mercedes and the entire F1 community when he has the chance to drive the Mercedes in front of his home fans. The Mercedes family has achieved incredible success in recent years, with Lewis Hamilton winning 11 races, breaking records and taking Schumacher’s seventh drivers’ title in 2020 (despite missing a lap with COVID-19).
Protect yourself
If you’re a Mercedes lover, both on and off the track, and own your own model, then Mercedes GAP insurance could be a wise investment. While most won’t fly an F1 track at 200 mph, it’s still important to make sure you have adequate cover.
Seeing Romain Grosjean return for a day of testing will be a sight to see and a reason to celebrate for the whole F1 family after his terrible crash last year.
