The Australian, who finished fourth in Spa’s wet qualifying, was frustrated when he was relegated back to fifth after completing the final Monza Q3s.
His team-mate Lando Norris finished the race 0.006 seconds ahead of fourth place, Max Verstappen 0.029 seconds ahead and third place for the sprint race for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday behind pole sitter Valtteri Bottas and his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
“I’m frustrated inside because I’m so close to the top three,” Ricciardo told Motorsport.com.
“Since I know that I have two chances – with the sprint and then the race – to make up time and make up ground, I’m definitely enjoying it at the moment.”
Ricciardo had previously told television crews, “I call myself a honey badger because I have the ability to turn around and feel a lot of anger in a short amount of time” – referring to his internal reaction to engineer Tom Stallard telling him he’d end up was fifth and warns that he will “not like” the gaps on Norris and Verstappen.
When asked by Motorsport.com where he lost the time of his team-mate and the Red Bull, Ricciardo, who set the fastest Q3 time in the last sector on his last lap, replied: “Second chicane. I feel like I left a bit of time on the table in both runs. So that was probably the place.
“I was always a bit off in the last sector, but I knew what I had there, so I think that’s pretty much perfect.
“But [at the] second chicane I never got the drive out of the corner that I wanted. A little there.
“But yes, it is only when you see the top 3 so closely [hurts]. But anyway. I have two chances of letting out some of this anger at a race start. Hopefully it’s a good time. ”

Ricciardo ran in front of Norris to tow the Briton on his first runs in Q3 and although he left the pits again as the lead McLaren in the final leg of qualifying, Norris was not directly behind him when the Mercedes cars filled the gap behind.
“[I was] in front both [times]“Said Ricciardo.
“But I had cars in front of me, so my anger would only be inside. Just be so close. But it is not directed to anyone or anything. It’s just that I don’t like to lose. “
