Lewis Hamilton only finished P3 in the British GP. However, he was arguably the quickest driver during the Grand Prix and was close to his first victory of the 2022 season. Moreover, the Brit’s battle with Leclerc and Perez towards the end of the race truly captured the essence of Formula 1.

The words, “Through goes Hamilton,” by David Croft in the commentary box will forever be an iconic line in sport’s history. As the battle for 2nd place was heating between Leclerc and Perez, Hamilton came out of nowhere to overtake the two drivers.

Interestingly, this is not the first time the seven-time world champion has delivered such a move. During the 2000 Elf Masters karting final, he made a move on the inside from 3rd position, beating the top two drivers and ultimately winning the race.

The race also featured some popular names including former racing drivers Danica Patrick and Anthony Davidson. Hamilton’s race craft was on point and his overtake was something the current 37-year-old Lewis will be proud of.

Starting from pole position, he dropped a place during the race. However, during the three-way battle for the first place, he gave up space for being double overtaken, only to pass both the drivers on the inside line seconds later.

The British GP brought the best out of Hamilton once again. The Mercedes man has the most number of wins in this venue and, with a P3 finish, he also secured his 13th podium on his home turf. Although Carlos Sainz stole the show, the Briton’s move will not be forgotten soon.

As Leclerc and Perez were fighting wheel to wheel, Hamilton once again sensed the opportunity, like he did in his karting days. However, he soon had to give up his place to the Mexican, who was on softer and fresher tires. Then, he finished third but was arguably the fastest driver of the day.

Speaking on whether he enjoyed the battle, he said, “I definitely did! That was very reminiscent of the karting days. And I feel that’s Formula 1 at its best. The fact that we were able to follow and dice like that, lap on lap is a testament to the direction I think that we’ve we’re now in.”
