After losing the Styrian Grand Prix, Mercedes announced that it had stopped development work on its 2021 car so it could throw all its resources on its 2022 challenger.
After Lewis Hamilton urged his team to make some upgrades to the car after the race on Sunday, the situation currently seems to favor Red Bull’s title ambitions.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner is skeptical that the Mercedes situation is as clear as her team boss Toto Wolff makes.
“What Mercedes does is their business, so we only focus on ourselves,” said Horner.
“We know Toto likes to throw the lights elsewhere, so I can’t believe they’ll get through the rest of this year without a single component on the car.
“But as I said, we can concentrate on our own job. Of course it’s a balancing act between this year and the next, but if that means we all have to work a little harder than the other teams.” , we are fully involved. “

Mercedes is aware that Red Bull is still working hard with its current car. The team from Milton Keynes was spotted delivering new components in the paddock of the Red Bull Ring over the weekend.
However, with Formula 1 moving to an entirely new car concept in 2022, Wolff believes that distracting all efforts from the new rules will prove costly in the long run.
He explained: “It’s a very, very tricky decision because we have new regulations, a completely different car concept, not just for next year, but for the coming years.
“You have to find the right balance, and pretty much everyone will be driving the car next year. Some may still bring things with them. Red Bull brought trucks or vans with new parts on Thursday and Friday. And in fairness it’s a strategy.
“And one that is proving to be successful because here they were simply in a league of their own in terms of car speed.”
Horner said Red Bull was also carefully considering where to balance its current resources but that it was in very good shape having started the season so strongly.
“For the first time in a long time, we came out of the blocks with a competitive car this year and managed to optimize and tune it,” he said.
“But with these cars you are at the top of the curve, you can only make marginal profits. And when you look at the new car for the next year, of course, every time it goes through a development cycle, there are significant steps.
“So it’s the right balance between the small gains for this year and the big strides for next year. But that’s no different than in the past. “
