Home »Olympia» Race winner calls Spikes “B *******” after setting a world record
An Olympic hurdler broke his own world record over 400 m. He didn’t mince his words as he commented on the runner-up’s track spikes.
Is it still bad sportsmanship when you imply that your opponent’s equipment is unfair but still beat them? A typical example: Karsten Warholm, who won Olympic gold over 400 m hurdles and then used scatology to refer to the tips of the tracks in the running shoes of runner-up Rai Benjamin.
Before the race on Tuesday, Warholm already held the world record in the event with a time of 46.70. Then he cracked it with a new time of 45.94 – the first time a runner had crossed the 400 m in less than 46 seconds. It is noteworthy that Rai Benjamin also broke the old record with his time of 46.17.

But according to Warholm, the proprietary damping technology is in Benjamin’s Nike Spikes was – um – profanely inappropriate. The winner spoke demonstratively to the press after the race.
“If you want padding, you can put a mattress there. But if you put up a trampoline, I think it sucks, and I think it takes the credibility of our sport. “
Strong stuff! What makes the world record hurdler so vehement?
Pebax and Padded Sprint Shoes: Problematic Technique
The “trampoline” Warholm refers to is a Pebax insert available for Nike sprint shoes. Pebax is a sophisticated elastomer.
When it comes to the credibility of rail sports, the manufacturer of the material itself boasts that “Pebax has made hundreds of world records possible on railways around the world”. Warholm contradicts the material on the basis of what some consider elitist.
“He had these things in his shoes that I hate,” he said. “I don’t understand why you should put something under a sprint shoe. At the middle distance I can understand it because of the damping. “
Lots Running shoes have materials similar to Pebax. And ironically, Warholm himself works with the help of. on his own shoes puma and the Mercedes F1 team.

Trying to dispel any doubt, he claims that his super spikes will be different from Benjamin’s Nikes.
“Yes, we have the carbon sheet, but we tried to make it as thin as possible. Because that’s how I would like to do it, ”he said. “Of course there will always be technology. But I also want to keep it at a level where we can compare the results because that’s important. “
He has an argument. In a sport where success, failure, and even records are separated by hundredths of a second, fair play is vital.
Fast lane?
Either way, the previous records over 400 m hurdles fall like flies. Warholms own record was only a month old when he broke it.
The previous record had remained unchallenged for 29 years. The 25-year-old joined various other athletes in their perception that the Tokyo track was unusually fast, calling it “crazy” and “very fast”.
But then the young world record holder seemed to step back from his mind for a moment to acknowledge the spirit of competition that underlies everything. “But it’s not just the track,” he said. “[I]It was also the guys who cheered each other on. “
May the thrust continue – trampoline-assisted or not.
