Eifel Mercedes F1 2020 GP

Free practice 3 was the last session where all cars were tuned to the truth. When the traffic lights in the pit lane of the Portuguese GP from F1 2021 Everything was already on the side of luck and the pilots. Although the track (a lot of changes, no grip, times in later sessions worse than in the previous …), the wind and the choice of tires today have made a big difference here and have changed the hierarchy of tomorrow’s grid. A super interesting classification in terms of strategies that the Mercedes team read very well to get a double.

Valtteri Bottas was heavily criticized during these previous races and last year. The driver didn’t seem quite okay, he was a bit out of place in many races, quite a distance from Lewis Hamilton and lagging behind cars that were in principle inferior to the Mercedes. The final criticism of the race increased with this accident with Russell when he tried to overtake a Bottas out of position with a Williams and both were eliminated from the race. However, it is fair to say that he has recovered there and has reached the bar. So he will start in first position tomorrow to try to win.

Fernando Alonso F1 2021 Alpine

Fernando Alonso F1 2021 Alpine

The disappointment here was the Red Bull. They came from very good qualifications, they looked strong in the race too, but they weren’t happy here. Verstappen was very angry at the end of qualifying. The car looked a bit unstable and was cornering. Since the track boundaries were monitored so closely that all four bikes were placed on the other side of the line, they took their time on this lap. So he had to be content with a P3 in the end. Tomorrow it’s time to go to the Mercedes and see if there is anything it can do in the race to push and climb a little higher …

Fernando Alonso is also seen with a certain lack of confidence. Here it looked like he was making good times in free practice and the first quarter. However, something happened in the second quarter. He came out very late and only played one try, which is not ideal as everyone made multiple tries because it was not the first time they started. In the end the weather was bad, about 8 tenths behind his teammate, and he left him out at P13. According to Alonso, something happened to the behavior of the car that has changed a lot during this session compared to the first. But they’re not excuses, he needs to keep gaining trust as Ocon made a P6 and Alonso should be more or less in that position.

I don’t want to overlook the position of Carlos Sainz, very good classification, well done. Vettel was also able to remove his thorn here and had a good classification. But for me the driver of the day should be Russell. He got a P11 with the Williams, which is really impressive. He shows that he deserves to be on a championship team …

Tomorrow the race. If classification was important, there will be more tomorrow. Nothing of today is useful for anything if tomorrow doesn’t end in the points. So we’ll see what’s waiting for us in the race. It will be interesting to see the variety of tires that everyone uses …
