The seven-time champ was in third place after refusing to pit when Mercedes called him in for a new set of Inters.

Since Hamilton ran over 40 laps on his intermediates, the grooves on his tires were gone, making it an effective slick tire.

Due to concerns that the tires would not finish the race, Mercedes called Hamilton and handed over the track position to Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc.

Esteban Ocon was the only driver to run the entire race on the same tires, and Pirelli’s Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola believes it would have been risky for Mercedes to do the same with Hamilton.

“If I look at the tires after the race, I would say no or at least it was really at the limit,” Isola told Sky Sports. “The tire wear, especially at the end of the race, was largely due to the design. It’s a bit dangerous to push the boundaries like today. I fully understand that they need to maximize the result in racing conditions.

“I think every car is different, so the wear and tear is different and depends on how much they push during the race, but the tires had more or less exposed cord.”

Isola revealed that Pirelli warned some teams not to run the entire race on one set of tires.

“We know the new asphalt is more abrasive and grippy compared to last year,” added Isola. “The track wasn’t dry, but it was still abrasive. It was really, really at the limit. I suggested to our assigned engineers to carry the teams to change tires and not come to the end because it was a risky move. “
