The Mexican faced a tough challenge at the start of the 2021 F1 season as he tried to adapt to the unique driving characteristics of the Red Bull high-rake concept.
He admitted that his previous driving style did not match the RB16B and that he had to rethink his approach to get the most of it.
To make his life easier, he opted for the setup that his team-mate Max Verstappen had ridden with, in order to avoid getting lost through too many settings.
But as his confidence in the car has increased, Perez now says that he has started trying some of his own things, even though he doesn’t do things entirely differently.
Perez said the back-to-back races at the Red Bull Ring were the perfect opportunity to experiment with your own thing and explore more of his car’s setup.
And since Verstappen received the latest upgrades when he arrived so the two Red Bull cars weren’t in the same configuration, it was even more important for Perez to think for himself.
“We did a lot of research into the car,” said Perez. “We took the opportunity to get to know the car much better based on the reference we had. So in the end we made the right adjustments.
“I’m starting to find my own way, my own direction, little by little.
“And yes, even if you don’t have both cars with the same spec, with the same aerodynamic spec, it’s harder to compare, you know, to compare the setup. So it’s important that we get ours [own] Way in this case. “

Although Perez’s hopes for a podium finish at the Austrian GP were dashed when he was pushed far by Lando Norris at the start of the race, the weekend overall looked more promising after overtaking both Mercedes.
