Nothing can keep up with Formula 1, says Jean-Eric Vergne from Formula E. F1 | Sports

Formula E driver Jean-Eric Vergne believes that the all-electric single-seater category cannot keep up with Formula 1, even though many see electric as the future.

In the UK alone, new cars and vans that run entirely on petrol and diesel will no longer be sold by 2030. In the UK, pressure will increase on the motorsport industry to take big steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Vergne is one of the few drivers who has raced in both categories and has won consecutive Formula E titles after a stint in F1 for Toro Rosso, now known as AlphaTauri.

With electric cars, however, the future of the automotive industry is more than likely. However, Vergne believes the two classes are not comparable.

“Formula 1 will always be Formula 1. I don’t think any category can compete with that,” he told mundodeportivo.com.

“If you have the history, the DNA that a sport like F1 has, nothing can compete with it. It will always be there.

Nyck de Vries from Mercedes-EQ won in a wet race. Jake Dennis from BMW i Andretti Motorsport scored a first win in his first season in the championship on Sunday.

However, many still believe that F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport. FE is now in its seventh season and Lucas Di Grassi, Sebastian Bumei and Nelson Piquet all share a title.

And Formula E is making great strides in the industry as the championship gains FIA World Championship status this season.

However, Vergne believes the similarities between F1 and FE are too great.

“It’s completely different and I don’t think it will ever be the same,” said the Frenchman.

“It’s completely different and you don’t have to make comparisons because the races are different. For example, we drive in the city centers and in F1 they only drive in some GPs like Monaco and Singapore.

“But the Formula E tracks are also much narrower and the races are also very different because energy management is very important in Formula E and not in Formula 1.”

FE is traveling to Monaco in a few weeks, followed shortly after by Formula 1.

After his win in Valencia, de Vries leads the drivers’ championship ahead of team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne, while Jaguar Racing’s Sam Bird slips to third place.
